Well, things got put on hold a bit recently with my job being cut in December.
Fortunately I start a new one on Monday in Denver, but it is going to take about a month and a half for the paychecks to start rolling in. This means that I'll be in catch-up mode with my bills for a while and I don't see us putting a deposit down for a trip anytime soon. I had hoped to have it already booked by now. Right now I don't know when I'm going to schedule it.
What we are thinking of doing is flying to Chicago, taking a cross-country train to Portland (sleeper car) making a few overnight stops on the way, especially in Glacier Park. In Portland, renting an RV and driving north stopping here and there hiting the highlights all the way to Vancouver. Then from there, flying home. Maybe looking up a B&B I came across in the area.
I think I'm going to leave the Alaska trip to another time, hopefully later to coincide with one of the St. Herman Pilgrimages. I also have friend in Sitka that I want to look up so I'd like to leave a little more time. Plus, that trip seems to be evolving more into a spirtitual pilgrimage of sorts, than a vacation, and perhaps a little monastary hopping may be in order.

| I was NOT looking forward to spending several days in unbearable heat, humidity and mosquito infestations however this was the week of the annual Pony Swim and Pony Penning and Auction which was a major part of the book as well as becoming a part of this region's (Chesapeake Bay) mythology. Mid-July camping was unavoidable. |
